Ever since the demise of the annual San Diego music festival, Street Scene, a few years ago, our city has been missing something. We have art festivals galore, and patriotic events left and right, but the music scene has had a void. Well not anymore. The San Diego U-T (Union Tribune) is hosting its inaugural Night & Day Street Fest on October 13th, complete with beer, food, art and MUSIC!
Headlining the festival is one of my favorite bands, G. Love and the Special Sauce. I developed a mad crush on the funky lead singer from Philly, G. Love (Garrett Dutton), in 1994, my first summer out of college, while working at a TV production studio and listening to his self-titled album on repeat 24/7. I thought, any guy who can play the harmonica like that and write a song solely about cold beer in the fridge is my kind of guy. My friends and I saw them play numerous times at small, local venues all over San Diego back in the mid to late 90’s and still today, Rodeo Clowns (probably his biggest hit, recorded with Jack Johnson) is one of my all-time favorite songs. Needless to say, I was pretty excited to see @ChrisCantore’s tweet about this festival featuring my mid 90’s crush (fingers crossed for a meet & greet!).
Other musical guests for the night include Donavon Frankenreiter, Pato Banton and Everest, and several other smaller bands, including Mattson 2 who I’ve heard play at Zenbu Sushi before and The Styletones. It’s a funky, cool line-up you don’t want to miss. For the full line-up of musical acts, check the UT Night and Day Fest website.
