If you didn’t go to Liberty Science Center after my last post, what’s wrong with you? Did it not sound fun enough for you? Well, this time you won’t be able to resist.
Coming up this weekend and next the Liberty Science Center has several extra-special, spectacularly spooky activities planned to celebrate Halloween, and all are free with paid admission or membership. As usual kids will have a blast while they bloody well learning something, especially with the first program. A perfectly frightful activity for Halloween, Bloody Hand Prints lets kids make their own bloody hand print while investigating pH, what it is and how it’s regulated in the blood to keep us healthy. And what kid doesn’t want to leave their bloody hand prints all over the place? You know what I say. Better at LSC than at my house. (No worries. No children will be harmed in the making of this activity.)
Not creepy enough for you? Then I dare you to take on LSC’s next exhibit, Do You Dare?! Here, chocolate-covered slugs, spicy larvae, scorpion lollipops and other culinary delights await your taste buds – that is, if you dare. What’s the matter? Scared of a little bug?
If eating slimy slugs (candy-coated or not) isn’t your thing, then head over and try out the Mystery Box. Brave the box and dare to place your hand inside. You never know what you might find feeling around in the dark. You just might pull out a gooey eyeball or hairy spider.
If you can’t get enough of the creepy crawlies, the LSC has a little something else for you. Get a real insider’s look at insects in the Creepy Crawly Worm Dissection lab on the 4th floor in Our Hudson Home. They may be small and slimy but these miniature marvels play a vital role in our ecosystem. Learn about the important work worms do as nature’s sanitation crew, and get a look inside to see exactly how they do it.
After a little worm dissection it’s time to examine some animal remains. These skeletons in the Brainless Artifacts exhibit, though, aren’t so spooky. You might just recognize a few. See which skeletons you can identify.
Finally, do a little of your own CSI work in the crime lab (also known as the Infection Connection Lab) on the 3rd floor. In A Bloody Mystery exhibit, kids can test samples of mysterious stains just like real crimes scene investigators do in trying to solve a mystery to determine which of them is actual blood.
Then head on over to the Zombie Autopsy and put your newly acquired CSI skills to work as you join scientists from around the world in their quest to uncover the mysteries of these creatures. Zombies are free and open to the public for slicing and examination in Infection Connection on the 3rd Floor on October 26 and 27 at 12:00 pm, 3:30 pm and 4:30 pm.
If all that isn’t enough, the LSC is also hosting two more special events for an additional fee. First is the Monster’s Alive: Nature of the Beast show. LSC has captured some of Hollywood’s most famous monsters and has joined with master monster hunter Carl Denham for this “live action spectacle” in the JD Williams Science Theater on the 2nd floor on October 26 and 27 at 1:00 pm, 2:00 pm, and 3:00 pm. Tickets are $5 per person and are available online or at the box office.
Secondly, for an extra special experience, families have the opportunity to stay overnight at the Liberty Science Center for a one time only event. Usually reserved for groups, the “Sleepless Slumber Party” will be hosted by the LSC on October 25. During the Halloween Camp In, campers will enjoy exclusive access to hundreds of hands-on exhibits, a film in the nation’s largest IMAX Dome Theater, fun Halloween-themed activities, slimy treats, scary “campfire” ghost stories and a not-so-scary story time. Includes Monster’s Alive show. This special event is $60 per person. Call 201.253.1214 or email email@example.com to register. Mention code “SPOOKY” to receive a special discount.
The weekend programs listed above run from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm, Saturdays and Sundays, October 19 & 20, October 26 & 27 and Thursday, October 31, except where noted. All are free with paid admission or membership with the exception of The Monsters Alive and Halloween Camp In events.
