Last year I shared a little trivia with my children.
- The groundhog is also known as a woodchuck, a marmot, a whistle-pig and a land beaver.
- It is the largest member of the squirrel family, usually weighing between 12 and 15 pounds.
- It is sometimes known as a whistle-pig because it whistles when it is alarmed and looking for a mate.
- The groundhog is the only mammal to have its own holiday.
After dinner, we enjoyed these cute and delicious Punxsutawney Phil Pudding Pops. They were a little challenging to separate from the cupcake papers. This year I’m planning on making chocolate cupcakes, still using Nilla Wafers to create Phil.
If there’s time, we would have fun making a Groundhog Day craft. One of my children already suggested making paper plate groundhogs; yes, it was the same child that suggested all of our other paper plate crafts. The Activity Village had some additional ideas.
Beside the fun tradition of Punxsutawney Phil, February 2 is my grandma’s birthday. Whenever I celebrated Groundhog Day, I celebrated my grandma. This year, like all other years, I spend a few minutes remember the entertaining times with her and her playfulness. Even though my children never met my grandma, I share my memories with them as we celebrate groundhogs everywhere.
