Favorite Valentine Books

Peek-a-Boo, I Love You! by Sandra Magsamen

Book, books, books…you know how much I love them.

They fill our house with happy times and give a great excuse to spend cozy moments together. I have some personal favorite Valentine books that are perfect for February. Give your kids something new to love this Valentine’s Day!

Peek-a-Book, I Love You! by Sandra Magsamen is a book meant for the youngest set. Babies will love lifting the flaps and seeing what is underneath. What itty-bitty doesn’t like to play peek-a-boo, right? My two-year old has fun perusing the pages, especially the last page that features a heart-shaped mirror where little ones can see themselves. This is definitely not just a Valentine’s Day book, but with hearts and love all over the pages, it is a perfect fit for February.

If You'll Be My Valentine by Cynthia Rylant

If You’ll Be My Valentine by Cynthia Rylant is a wonderful book for young children. We get to see a little boy hand out homemade valentine cards to all the members of his family. He shares his love with all the important people in his life and we get to see how he enjoys his time with each of them. My favorite is the end where he hangs a heart-shaped valentine on a tree and gives it a hug. “We’ll love the trees and all the world…we’ll love each other, too.” Perfect for preschoolers and young elementary children!

The Day it Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond

The Day It Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond is a whimsical book about a little girl, Cornelia Augusta. Is that not the most fun name to say? As she walks outside, it rains hearts and she catches a bunch of them. When she goes home, she takes a look at all the hearts she collected and decides to create some Valentines. Noticing that all of her hearts are a little different, she carefully decides which one of her friends will receive each one. At the end of the book, we get to see whom each Valentine was meant for. The illustrations in this book are lively and cheerful. A must for your library at home!

Hug Time by Patrick McDonnell

Hug Time by Patrick McDonnell is about a kitten that wants to give the whole world a hug. He makes a “hug to-do list” and sets out to accomplish his goal. We follow him on his journey as he hugs all sorts of animals, fish, and trees, but when he makes it to the North Pole, he finds himself alone. He isn’t sad for long, as a polar bear offers to give HIM a hug. A great story with a message about sharing the love that you have with others. Everyone needs a reminder to hug more often!
