Rakestraw Books (The Bookstore in Danville) is not only one of the best bookstores ever, but has been in Danville and independently owned since 1973. I went there in elementary school for Book Night when it was two stories, and then later when it moved to the Livery and Mercantile and then I worked there when it migrated over to the Iron Horse Shopping Plaza. I was fortunate enough to attend and then work at two midnight Harry Potter release parties—the second of which I passed out books while six months pregnant. Harry Potter release parties may have been all the rage, but how many bookstores can say that they hosted Tim Gunn as an honorary judge to a student fashion show? Rakestraw Books has. The event was a fundraiser for Wardrobe for Opportunity and was an near-instant sell-out. I can also say, having modeled in the show and met Gunn, he is one of the most polite and kind celebrities I have ever met. And I’ve met more than just a few, thanks to my gig at Rakestraw Books.
Great events for this summer include Rakestraw Books’ Third Annual Book Group Festival on Tuesday, June 4th at 10:30am. The morning will start off with bookstore staff members talking about their favorite picks for book groups. Random House Books sales representative Liz Willner will then give a few more suggestions, and then you and your book group will be set for the year! But to finish off the event, lunch will be served (the food, planned and cooked by Rakestraw Book store-owner, Michael Barnard, is always divine) with guest of honor, Maggie Shipstead, author of the book-group-perfect Seating Arrangements.
On June 13, at 7pm, all Real Housewives addicts and barbeque lovers should flock to Rakestraw Books for an event with Teresa Giudice, who just put together a cookbook,Fabulicious!: On the Grill: Teresa’s Smoking Hot Backyard Recipes. To boot, the event is a benefit for Oakland’s Children’s Hospital.
Both events require reservations. Call the bookstore at (925) 837-7337 to let them know you’re coming.
For summertime reading fun, and to break up the long days of summer, bring your preschool/kindergartner to Rakestraw Books for Kids Story-Time, on Mondays and Wednesday s at 10:30am. Story-time is free and doesn’t require reservations– just show up with your favorite little person (or people). While you’re there, check out the children’s section, and the new novels table for you.
Rakestraw Books doesn’t typically carry lots and lots of the old classics, so be prepared to try something new, and if you want something in particular, you can always order it—special orders typically take just a few days.
Get ready for summer—stock up for long afternoons by the pool or on vacation—and get ‘em all at Rakestraw Books.
