Indy Reads Books

I love bookstores.

Especially independent book stores. I just discovered an absolute gem on Mass Ave called Indy Reads Books. It’s not your ordinary book store in that it is a non-profit. All proceeds from the books sold go to support the adult literacy programs of Indy Reads. This book store creates a beautiful and comfortable atmosphere where literacy and learning is embraced and encouraged. Their calendar is full of programs – Paws to Read, Children’s Story Time, guest authors and a variety of classes through Trade School Indianapolis (which is awesome – students barter for instruction).

We attended a session of Paws to Read which is held every first and third Saturday and 11:30 am. Kids can read read to therapy dogs and there is no charge for this program. My son had read to a therapy dog at school and was really excited to do it at Indy Reads Books. I wasn’t sure how my three year old twins would do because they aren’t really reading yet. They turned pages, pointing out what was going on in the story and didn’t fail to give the dogs plenty of attention. Book after book flew off the shelves and my son spent close to 45 minutes reading to the dogs. And if your kid falls in love with a book that they’ve picked to read, no problem. All children’s books are only $1! At that price, you can buy a bunch of books, return them to Indy Reads Books when your kids outgrow them and it all goes to supporting a really important mission of increasing literacy.

As I mentioned, all the proceeds go to support Indy Reads programs. Most of the staff at Indy Reads Books are volunteers. Indy Reads Books is such a great space and I could browse for hours. As I mentioned, the books for sale at Indy Reads Books are a super great deal. You can also donate books or volunteer. Check out the details on the Indy Reads Books website. Make sure to check out the many programs and support literacy by supporting Indy Reads Books. Indy Reads Books is located at 911 Massachusetts Avenue. Another plus is that Indy Reads Books has its own parking lot so you can park for free (we learned this after filling a meter with coins down the street a bit). With all there is to do on Mass Ave., make a day of it with your family and support Indy Reads!
