As this winter season is starting to wrap up (I live in the glorious desert) I find that we’re still coughing and sneezing a little more than I like. I typically wait until it’s serious to head in to the Doctor’s office, so it’s nice to have a few home-remedies to try first, in hopes that we don’t have to get there.*
- Honey Tea
The above recipe is a wonderful remedy for when you’re feeling congested and have a sore throat. It’s easy to make and you can store the jar in your fridge through the season, only using a spoonful when you need it. I’ve just recently become acquainted with Turmeric and I have been so impressed with it in tea! I actually crave it now.
For my children I do a simplified version with just honey and sometimes a few lemon slices. They have grown to love the taste of honey in warm water and request it now whenever they aren’t feeling well. If they have a nasty cough at night that just won’t stop I’ll give them a spoonful of honey and let them lick at it like a lollipop (check out this honey lollipop recipe too). I’ve been amazed at it’s ability to coat their throat and sooth a cough.
2. Vicks Vapor Rub (or equivalent essential oil blend)
You guys, this stuff is magic. I remember reading early in my motherhood that you could rub this on the feet of your babies and get rid of night coughing and it.has.saved.me. It’s a trick I pass on to as many mothers as I can-so many nights we’ve gone from awake every half hour to sleeping peacefully. My girls love it when I rub this on their feet, put socks on them, and rub the remnants left on my hands on their chests (once they’re over a year, use baby rub on your younger children).
3. Gummi Vitamins
I see a big difference when my kids are taking their vitamins and when they are not. We go from sniffles to less sniffles when they take their vitamins regularly. The same goes from when we finish the Christmas season (candy, cake and dessert non-stop) and get back into the routine of things (healthier snacks, structured dinner, etc). Eating healthfully and insuring it with the extra boost of vitamins really makes an impact.
4. Apple Cider Vinegar
I know. It’s nasty. And it’s becoming the new coconut oil with how many uses it has. But IT.WORKS. When I start feeling a little sniffly I start drinking apple cider vinegar and more than once I’ve resisted getting any sicker. Some people like to take it in a shot glass and do it all at once, that burns and I don’t like it. I prefer to fill a big glass with ice and cold water and then top it off with a few tablespoons (ice because you don’t want this to get warm). It works great for an upset stomach as well and I’m getting to the point where I actually like the taste because it makes me feel better! 5. Facial Massage
