Making the Most of Fresh Lemons

Making the Most of Fresh Lemons

I sometimes have leftover lemons or part of a lemon when I’m making something, or other times I need to preserve the lemons before they go bad. I can use the extras at a later time, whenever I want. Here are the few easy things I do to make my lemons last longer.

Make Lemon Juice
Squeeze the lemons or use a citrus juicer to get the most lemon juice from your lemons. It can be frozen in ice cube trays. Once frozen they can be broken out of the trays and put in a zip lock bag and back in the freezer (just like you would do for homemade baby food!).

Make Lemon Zest
Use a small grater to grate the lemon rinds to make your lemon zest. The lemon zest can be frozen in a plastic bag. Try throwing a pinch of frozen lemon zest in your next smoothie! If you are using it for something else it will thaw very quickly, just add it as you would usually to your recipe.

Freshen Up Your Garbage Disposal
Throw the rest of your lemons into the garbage disposal to make it smell nice! I found this article that tells you how to conduct your own experiment to see if lemons actually have cleaning powers or if it is just a marketing scheme. If you believe they posses real cleaning properties this article has 24 things you can clean with a lemon.
