Essential Oil Hacks for Parents

As adorable and fun as they are, raising children can be incredibly difficult and stressful. For parents, anything that can make the day go a little smoother is invaluable, and essential oils are a simple, affordable solution to many daily parental chores. From the moment your kids wake up to helping them fall asleep at night, there’s an essential oil that can help you save time and money.

Oils For an Energizing Start to the Day

It can be a constant struggle to get some kids out of bed in the morning. Whether you’re getting kids ready for school or you’re simply trying to develop a weekend morning routine, essential oils can awaken your child’s senses and help them begin each day feeling focused and energized. This can be in the form of diffusing oils in their room, or making fun snacks full of nutrients!

Here are a few of the best essential oils to add to a diffuser in your child’s room or in the car on the way to school each morning:

  • Bergamot

Bergamot is a citrus fruit that looks like a large lime. When Bergamot oil is diffused, it is best at putting you in a great mood and easing any stress or anxiety your child may have about facing the day.

  • Grapefruit

Smelling Grapefruit first thing in the morning can reduce sleepiness and mental fatigue. It will clear out some of that brain fog in the morning and increase your child’s motivation to get up and at ’em.

  • Peppermint

This refreshing scent has several health benefits, including boosting energy levels. While it diffuses into your child’s bedroom, you can dilute it in some water and either drink it or rub it into your temples as an alternative to caffeine.

  • Rosemary

Breathing rosemary helps improve brain function, and can be useful to help children concentrate and remember things better as they continue to grow and learn each day.

  • Wild Orange

If your kids enjoy orange juice in the morning, they may love waking up to the smell of oranges too. Wild Orange essential oil is an easy way to fight fatigue and uplift their moods.

Reduce Routine Household Cleaning Costs

From doing laundry to freshening up your vacuum cleaner, many household chores can be made simpler and cheaper with essential oils such as lemon, tea tree, orange, and lavender.

  • Dryer Sheets

To make your own dryer sheets, combine one cup of white vinegar with about 20 drops of your favorite essential oil and dunk pieces of fabric or dryer balls in it.

  • Air Freshener

In a two-ounce spray bottle, add five drops of essential oil and fill the rest with water to quickly take the smell out of shoes and sports bags.

  • All-Purpose Cleaner

In a bucket, combine one cup of rubbing alcohol, one cup of distilled white vinegar, ten drops of orange essential oil, ten drops of tea tree essential oil, one teaspoon of dish soap, and between one and two gallons of hot tap water.

Bringing the Fun to Bathtime

Letting your kids pick out an essential oil to add to their bath water can help get them excited for bath time and help them wind down before bed. Let them pick from the most calming and soothing essential oils, such as lavender, jasmine, or chamomile. They woke up to amazing, revitalizing scents, and to bookend the day, they’ll fall asleep to smells that encourage deep sleep and sweet dreams.
