I don’t know about your children, but for my two older kiddos, the concepts of mean, median, mode, and range are tough math topics. They struggle to keep them straight and no matter how many cheat sheets they make up or how many times they practice problems, it is just one of those concepts that has a hard time sticking.
Thankfully, there’s a ditty that goes to the tune of “Hey Diddle, Diddle” that captures the concepts of mean, median, mode, and range. Say it often enough and 1) you won’t be able to get it out of your head for weeks and 2) your kids will have a quick reference for the meanings of the math terms that ~~drive them crazy~~ they can’t wait to learn.
The Difference Between Mean, Median, Mode and Range
What are the definitions of the concepts, you ask?
- Median is the middle number in a set of numbers when they are arranged numerically.
- Mean is the average of all of the numbers. You add them all up and divide by the number of numbers that were in the set.
- Mode is the number that appears the most often in a set of numbers.
- Range is the difference between the highest number and the lowest number.
