Not only is the finished artwork super cute, but making it is great fun with kids. We used a homemade sugar glue recipe from our partner, Imperial Sugar, to glue the tissue paper down.
Making sugar glue is one of our favorite ways to help kids understand that you can use anything in your cabinets to make a fun craft. We use it all the time in our activities.
Back-to-School Apple Craft

- Red tissue paper
- Green tissue paper
- Brown tissue paper
- Homemade sugar glue (recipe below)
- Paint brushes
- Apple outline printable
Homemade Sugar Glue Recipe
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup Imperial Sugar Extra Fine Granulated Sugar
- 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
- 1 1/2 cups water
Mix flour, sugar, water and oil in a pot and stir over low heat until well combined and smooth in texture to make the homemade sugar glue.
Print the apple outline on the white cardstock, then apply the glue to the apple outline using the paint brush.
Tear the tissue paper into pieces and crumple each piece to form a circle. Press onto the wet glue and continue to add pieces to create a mosaic.
Allow to dry completely and your artwork is ready to display!
