MAKE A MEMORY JAR

I love taking pictures and writing the stories of everyday life.

My three boys on the other hand are NOT thrilled to pose for pictures and have their hands into EVERYTHING.

A few years ago, after I dropped the shells from a beach vacation into a Mason Jar and set it next to my scrapbooks, it occurred to me that the boys collect things that could be saved.

They pick up “treasures” everywhere we go.

These treasures to them are just like the photos and stories to me.

When these treasures are displayed in a glass {or clear plastic jar}, they remind us of people, places and times we spent together.

We use the jars to remember vacations. The contents are precious to us, but usually consist of rocks, sticks, berries, shells, small items found along a trail or at a park.

While one jar will remind us of a day on the beach chasing waves, another will trigger another memory.

Like a day spent along a quiet mountain stream.

We were there with cousins and grandparents. It started as trail exploration next to a playground and ended as an entire afternoon spent under a tree canopy devoted to water diversion.

The cousins worked together to make twig dams and dig out valleys to fill with water.

River stones and pointed sticks became construction tools.

Plans were carefully sketched amid the pine needles.

The project took several hours. A small portion of the mountain stream had been diverted around a large stone. It is a task that likely went unnoticed, except for those who hold it as a major accomplishment.

We went back last year to see if the water was still following the new path. I couldn’t tell, but the kids were positive that they had changed the course of stream history.
