Places to vacation as a family

Kevin Gardner

From family traditions at Christmas to favorite family meals, every familial unit is different. It is for this reason that the vacations that your family takes should be different from your neighbors. This article will feature some of the best family vacation destinations that you should take this year.

  1. Washington DC

Introduce your children to the founding fathers of America on a trip to our nation's capital, Washington D.C. Your family will not only get a big dose of history, but your kids can take advantage of the numerous family-friendly spots. Bus tours that you can start and disembark at your whim are a popular way to get around the city. If you like to take family vacations on the cheap, the Smithsonian museums are a great way to get in some family time - for free. For a fun yet unorthodox way to spend time with your family, visit the International Spy Museum with your kids.

  1. Maui, Hawaii

Maui currently operates as one of the most family-friendly vacation spots in the United States. In Maui, you can do everything from surfing to attending an actual luau. Bring your kids to the Maui Ocean Center, where they can experience marine life through their touch tanks. If you want some outdoor fun, try taking a snorkeling trip in Wailuku. Who knows? You and your family could even see turtles in their natural habitat!

  1. Virginia Beach, Virginia

A visit to Virginia Beach can be as action-packed or as laid-back as you want it to be. Take your kids to the Ocean Breeze Waterpark. Take your partner in a kayak and look out for dolphins along the coast. Some of the museums and aquariums you can visit with your family include the Military Aviation Museum or the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center.

  1. Chicago, Illinois

The city of Chicago can present your family with a great arts scene, shopping districts, and some pretty famous eateries. You and your family will probably look up at the sky a lot as the city's architecture is truly awe-inspiring. If you have a family full of architecture buffs, take a Chicago Architecture River Cruise. See even more examples of beautiful artworks in Chicago's Millennium Park. For a special view of the Windy City, go to Willis Tower's Skydeck Chicago or the 360 CHICAGO Observation Deck. After a full day of sightseeing, take your family out to eat. One suggestion involves going to a place that's known for their deep dish pizzas, a staple in the Windy City.

  1. Charlotte, North Carolina

If you and your family are huge museum buffs, then Charlotte certainly has your family covered. Some of the museums that you can visit include the Carolinas Aviation Museum, which celebrates North Carolina's identity as the birthplace of modern flight, and the Levine Museum of the New South, which celebrates the history of the South that took place after the Civil War. Your kids might like the Discovery Place, three museums in one. Those parents that want time away from their kids might want to attend a Discovery Place event called "Science on the Rocks", an evening event that combines cocktails with presentations and special guests. With all the homes for rent Charlotte NC, you won't have to put up your entire family in an expensive hotel. Make a home away from home as you see all there is to see in Charlotte.

  1. Empire, Michigan

If you have a really outdoorsy family, Empire, Michigan could be just the place to take your family this year. Located on Lake Michigan, you can look for shipwrecks, swim in a really big lake, and sleep under the stars at the end of a long day. Since Lake Michigan is a freshwater body, your small children can play in it without a lot of issues. You and your family can even paddle on the waves when you visit one of Empire's beaches.
