How to Help Your Kids Form Healthy Habits
When you have a family, it isn't just your health or your habits that are important, teaching your kids how to be healthy is important, too. That being said, it may not always feel easy to get your kids to follow along with the kinds of things you want them to do. If you're looking for ways to help get the whole family living a healthier lifestyle, here are some things to consider.
Serve Fun and Balanced Meals
Kids may be notorious for being picky eaters, but that doesn't mean that they shouldn't be eating a healthy diet. Even though you may not always be able to get them to eat a new vegetable on the first try, there can be other ways to make sure that they are getting the nutrition they need. One way to do this is to serve a new healthy food along with one of their favorite foods, so that they aren't overwhelmed by new flavors all at once. Another way to help them eat better is to sneak in healthy foods with things like green superfoods powder and incorporate them into foods like soups and baked goods without them realizing it.
Make Exercise a Party
Many kids enjoy watching TV or spending time on their tablets, and even though that may be fine in moderation, it can lead to a sedentary lifestyle. Because of this, it is important to get your kids off the couch and moving on a regular basis. Sometimes simply playing can be enough exercise, but there can be benefits to having your kids try different kinds of workouts, too. While your kids may not exactly be interested in doing aerobics or workouts that are more geared towards adults, teaching them basic workout moves like jumping jacks and push ups can be a great way to start. Also, introducing them to new kinds of movement like simple yoga poses or fun dance moves can make exercise feel like a party.
Teach Your Kids to De-Stress
Stress may not be a big part of your child's life, but that doesn't mean that kids never do experience stress, or that it wouldn't be helpful to teach them some de-stressing techniques early on in life. This way, as they experience stressful situations later on in life they will be better prepared for them. Some things you can teach your kids are deep breathing techniques, if they are ever feeling overwhelmed, upset or angry.
Additionally, it can also be beneficial to introduce them to mindfulness, also known as meditation. There are some studies that suggest that kids who meditate experience better moods, and do better on school work and tests, as well. Even though it might not be easy to get your kids to sit still for 20 minute intervals at first, starting off small with intervals of 5 minutes and building up can be a great way to get your kids into meditation.
Know That You Set the Example
No matter what you decide to teach your kids or do with them to help encourage them to live a healthier lifestyle, it is important to remember that they will ultimately follow along with what you do, rather than what you say. Considering this, one of the best things that you can do to help ensure that your kids take their health seriously and engage in healthy lifestyle habits is to make sure that you do these things yourself, and give them the right kind of example to follow.
When you have a family, everyone's health is important. However, it may not always feel easy to get everyone on board with trying new things or leading a healthier lifestyle, especially when it comes to your kids. The good news is, though, that there are things you can do to get them interested in being more healthy, and that no matter what if you live a healthy lifestyle your kids will often follow your example.
