Hello Summer! Outdoor Activities for Kids
Winter is one of the longest months--or at least it feels like it. Sledding down the hills in the neighborhood is fun at first, but after months of it, the charm wears off and your kids just want to go swimming in the outdoor pool again. Luckily, winter is coming to an end and summer will be just around the corner. To help you prepare for those great months of no school and no homework, here are some of the best outdoor activities for warmer days that your kids will love and enjoy.
1. Backyard Camping
Every child loves the idea of camping. They get to run around outside, no bedtimes, no showers, and a whole lot of family time. However, there isn’t always room in your schedule to take the days off and go on a camping trip. This is where backyard camping comes into play. Outdoor camping is just what it sounds like: camping in your backyard. This way, your kids can still enjoy the fun of staying up late in the tent and sleeping bags. They can even make smores in they want to. But you don’t have to take the weekend off and you don’t have to plan out an entire trip. It’s also just as fun for your kids as real camping.
2. Kids Science Experiments
Kids love to explore new areas of learning--especially if it means growing mold or creating sun-powered technology. The summer is the perfect time to do this kind of thing since they can do the projects outdoors in the sun. Solar panels are becoming more and more popular all over the world. There are solar powered stop lights, engines, and houses. If you’ve gone through the solar panel cost and installed them on your own home, summer is the perfect time to explain how they work to your children. You can show them on a smaller-scale device how the sun creates energy and can power a variety of different things.
3. Bike Rides
If your kids have endless energy, you might want to take them on an activity that will help to cool them down. Summer bike rides are the perfect option. You can all exercise at the same time as you bike through a park or neighborhood area. It’s also great because the only thing that you’ll need for this activity is your family and some bikes. Once you’re all together, you can bond and exercise while having an amazing time in your neighborhood. This will help your children to learn the importance of exercise early in their lives and teach them to love being outdoors.
4. Make Ice Cream
Who doesn’t love ice cream? Better yet, who doesn’t love making ice cream? This is a fun, easy activity that your kids will love. You can also do the entire process outside with milk (or dairy-free milk), ice, salt, sugar, vanilla, and a gallon-sized plastic bag. Here is a link that details exactly how to make it with your kids. They will love the project and the fun of being together as a family. When you’re finished, you can add all kinds of toppings to make it the perfect summer treat.
5. Water Balloon Baseball
You might already see where this one is going to go. In the summer, sometimes all your kids want to get in the pool or play with the hose. If you bring up this fun activity, they won’t be able to get enough. Fill up water balloons, grab a baseball bat or whiffle ball bat and start swinging. Of course, you shouldn’t be expecting the water balloons to fly very far. Most of the time they will explode all over the batter, but that’s the point! It’s the perfect way for your kids to cool down and have a great time.
Summer is a magical time and you should be ready to take advantage of all of the benefits. Have fun with your kids while they’re out of school. Take them on trips and hikes. Help them to explore their creative minds and teach to love learning.
