Is it the right time?

You need to seriously think about the timing of your upgrade. Talk it over with you family to make sure everyone is on board. Any kind of construction to a house can disrupt everyone's schedule so it is best to make sure everyone understands what is about to happen. You should never plan an upgrade if you or a family member just got out of the hospital or is pregnant. In these situations its best to use your common sense and follow your instincts. Don't plan anything until you talk to your neighbors. Be kind and courteous by giving them the full details of what is about to go down. Let them know how long it will take and how they will be affected.

How much?

Money is always going to be the damper in your home's upgrade. You must plan well and make sure you have enough funds to do what you envision. Don't find yourself short handed with money and can't pay the general contractor or the crew. This leads to a court battle and your home stays in the construction mode until all disputes are settled. Find out as much as you can about what kind of upgrade you want and the costs associated with it. Don't rush into your project and take as much time as you need. There shouldn't be a hesitation to call it off if you know that you just will not have the money at all. Once you have an idea of what you want to look around at other homes that have had the same upgrade that you desire. Without being to pushy ask as many questions as you can.

Repairs

Most of our homes are in need of some kind of repair. If you find yours needs a lot of repair it make be time to simply upgrade the parts that are falling apart. Take everything into account of what can be done first. Don't try to upgrade every part of your home all at once because this could be a nightmare. Further, think about the costs versus repairing a roof or getting an entire new one put on. You might discover that a slight repair will do the trick and you don't have to spend any money on a repair at all. Take the time to work the math and see how it works with your schedule before you do anything.

Upgrading your home doesn't have to be difficult if you know how to plan and put some money aside. Decide on whether you want to just repair a spot, do an entire replacement or add something on. Prepare your wallet for your new upgrade as well. Make sure you have the right amount of funds to stream roll the entire project. Plan as much as you can to avoid any embarrassing situations. Talk to all family members about the upgrade to make sure everyone is in agreement. With construction going on it can disrupt their lives more than you think. It's a timely process and everyone needs to understand what they are going to experience. It can turn into a mess if some of the family is against the upgrades all together.
