Common Household Items That Need Replacing

Kevin Gardner

Did you know that there are items in your house that you use everyday that require frequent changing? Not many people do! Have you stopped to think when is the last time you changed out your toothbrush? How old is your mascara? Have you checked the expiration date on your fire extinguisher lately? Items that you are using everyday could be potentially harmful to your health just because of how old they are. Here are a few things that you need to trash and repurchase if you can’t remember how long ago you bought them!

According to the American Dental Association, it is suggested that you trash your old toothbrush or toothbrush head every 3 months. Yes, every 3 months! It is said that once your bristles start to bend, your toothbrush is no longer cleaning your teeth effectively. It is also recommended to change your toothbrush every few months due to the germs and bacteria hiding in your bristles. If you keep it in the bathroom, it may even have a few poop particles lingering on it. Gross, I know.

A great way to remember when to change out your toothbrush is to set a reminder on your phone's calendar. Buy a multipack and keep an extra under your sink for those busy months you may not be able to run to the store. To be extra sure that you change out your toothbrush in the correct amount of time, sign up for a Toothbrush subscription. Once the new brush is delivered to your door, just trash the old one! It is a great way to make sure that you are replacing it at the right time every few months.

The cosmetic industry is a billion dollar industry. 50% of the population uses it in some shape or form. It can get pretty pricey, and that is why many people will hold onto makeup that is over a year or two old. That is something that should never be done. All makeup has an expiration date that needs to be taken very seriously. After all, it is applied around your eyes and mouth! Using old and expired makeup can cause skin irritation and infections.

Mascara needs to be replaced every 3 months due to the fact that bacteria can invade the product and cause an eye infection. A great tip that helps you make sure that you are not wasting money on unused product is to buy travel sized mascaras. When having to replace them every 3 months, the travel size is typically the perfect amount! Not many people are able to go through an entire full-sized tube in under 3 months.

Have a favorite shade of lipstick that you have held onto for years? It is time to trash it and replace it. Lipstick is usually only good for around a year after it has been opened. Bacteria can easily get trapped and grow in the tube. The thought of smearing bacteria all over your lips isn’t an appealing one!

Fire Extinguisher

If you don’t have a Fire Extinguisher, you need to run out and get one immediately. If you do have one, have you checked the expiration date on it? Yes, they can expire and need to be replaced every so often. Depending on the brand, they can last anywhere between 5 to 15 years. It is always very important to have a working fire extinguisher in your house in case disaster strikes, and an expired one is as good as not having one at all.

Like all things in life, nothing lasts forever. Make sure you are constantly replacing your household items to keep yourself happy and healthy. Plan ahead and set aside funds to repurchase the items if you need too. Items typically last months to a few years, so you have plenty of time to plan for the future! Be smart and do your research! Germs and bacteria could be growing on just about anything.
