5 Ways to Make Sure Your Kids Are Safe
Everyone wants their children to succeed and be happy, but above all else they want their children to be safe. Parents worry, that's just what parents do. What can you do as a parent to mitigate those worries and make sure your children are safe?
Plan for the Worst
First things first; always have a plan in case the worst should happen. Who will take care of your kids if something happens to you and your partner? Do you have money set aside for them? Make sure that your will is clear and in order, and look into getting a civilian or military life insurance policy, whichever is appropriate. Have a family disaster plan in case of hurricane, tornado or other natural disaster, whichever is most likely to strike in your area. Make sure your kids know what to do and who to call in case of an emergency.
Teach Them Well
Part of that is teaching them well. This doesn't just mean making sure they have the best education possible, it also means teaching them critical thinking skills and responsibility. Common sense is a learned skill like everything else. You have to teach your children what reasonable precautions and sensible safety guidelines look like, and these days you have to teach them that in both physical and digital environments. This also means teaching them to ask why, to question you along with everyone and everything else. The very best they can be might well be better than you are now.
Model Good Behavior
One of the best ways to teach these kinds of skills is by modeling these kinds of skills. Children are natural mimics, that's part of what makes them so good at picking up languages. If you want your children to be studious, responsible and careful, you need to be studious, responsible and careful yourself. This isn't to say that you can expect your children to pick up every one of your good habits, but it's going to be much harder for them to develop good habits that you haven't modeled for them first. Among the good habits you should model to your children is maintenance and health.
Health and Maintenance
Staying on top of the regular maintenance for your home and car is one of the best ways to prevent accidents and keep your whole family safe. Another way to ensure the safety of your family is by building healthy habits and routines. Listen to your doctor's advice, eat healthy as much as possible and practice safe habits. Not only is this better for you, your home and your family, it also helps model good habits to your children and it's a great way to teach them about self care and personal responsibility.
Trust and Clear Communication
But above all else, the best thing you can do for your children is keep open clear lines of communication with them. If something is wrong, they need to feel able to ask you for help. That means that they need to be able to trust you, and that is something that goes both ways. If you have already done your best to prepare them for the worst case scenarios, and you know that you have taught them well and modeled good habits, then you will know that you can trust them. If you know that, and demonstrate your trust through concrete actions, they will have trust in you as well. If you trust each other and communicate openly and honestly, you can overcome any obstacles.
None of this will eliminate all your worries as a parent. Your children will still make mistakes and accidents will happen. There are things outside even your control as a parent, and as a parent you will find a way to worry about all of them. If you plan for the worst, teach them good habits and keep open and clear communication with them, you will know that you did the best you could, no matter what happens.
