3 Ways to Make Home Renovation Fun For the Family

Here are some tips to getting the kids involved on your home projects.

The thought of renovating a home while children are currently living in it can be terrifying. Automatically, the brain starts to throw out images of paint spillage in unwanted places, constantly stopping and starting due to having to take care of little ones, and even the scary thoughts of all of the dangerous things that could happen. Even though those are major concerns when renovating a home, the daunting task can turn into a memorable family event.

Home renovation is a life-changing event that children can be a part of too. It can easily become a family memory that is shared and looked back on for years to come. Depending on the child’s age, there are so many different ways for them to get involved and apart of the action!

Let Them Decide

One easy way that a child can get involved in the renovation of your home is to allow them to select the paint color of the room. If repainting their room is not on the agenda, consider adding it for them. Getting to be creative and express themselves in early childhood is so important to their mental growth. Did you know that getting to participate in creative experiences can help a child express and cope with their feelings?

Taking your child to the paint store and allowing them to pick out the wall color for their bedroom will be such an exciting day for them. It will be a moment that they will remember for the rest of their lives. Personally, I remember the day I got to pick out the wall color for my bedroom. I picked a baby blue shade and I felt so grown up. It was the most important decision an eight-year-old could make!

Painting and repainting the walls is not something to be worried about. I know it can be scary when they run up saying they want their rooms to be hot pink, but always remember it can be painted over in the future. To protect your walls, you can always skim coat your walls at any given time. Skim coating your walls is a process that smooths out damaged drywall, which improves the wall overall. It is also pretty easy to do as well!

Leave Their Mark

Do you plan on laying any type of concrete in your home renovation? If so, this is a great opportunity to create something that will be worth more than gold. As a parent, it is known that children grow up in a blink of an eye. Their tiny little shoes will be full grown sneakers before you know it.

Why not use an area of freshly poured concrete to capture your child’s handprints or footprints forever? It will be a fun experience for the family, but it is also something that you will be able to cherish forever. Children will love the opportunity to get messy and feel as though they are leaving their mark on something. It will also be fun to really see how much they have grown and changed as the years pass.

Remember to coat your hands with vegetable oil to help with the cleanup!

Let Them Pretend

Children love to copy and mimic their parents. Imitation is actually a stepping-stone to independence! Buy your child some fake tools so that they can pretend to work on the house right alongside Mom and Dad. They will feel involved and think that they are helping fix their house. It will also be an adorable photo opportunity for your family scrapbook. They even make tiny tool belts. How cute!

Always be sure to keep real tools out of reach though.

If you have an upcoming house renovation, don’t fret. Take it one day at a time and make the best out of every situation. It is an experience that is going to be full of memories for your entire family!
